Bollywood ruled the 56th National Film Awards Saturday, bagging as many as 13 awards, with films like ‘Fashion’, ‘Rock On!!’, ‘Firaaq’ and ‘Jodha Akbar’ winning two awards each in various categories. But Bengali film ‘Antaheen’ won the best feature film award and three more.

While Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Fashion’, a dark tale about the Indian fashion industry, won its heroine Priyanka Chopra the best actress award and got Kangana Ranaut the best supporting actress honour, Farhan Akhtar’s cult music-based film ‘Rock On!!’ got the best Hindi film award. Actor Arjun Rampal won the best supporting actor for the film too.

Ashutosh Gowariker’s epic ‘Jodha Akbar’ won Chinni Prakash and his wife Rekha Prakash the best choreography award for the song ‘Azeem-o-shaan shehenshah’, a number that depicts dance forms of different Indian states. Fashion designer Neeta Lulla, who styled actress Aishwarya Rai in the film, has won the best costume designer award.

Nandita Das’ directorial debut ‘Firaaq’, which was based on the 2002 Gujarat riots, has won the awards for best editing (A. Sreekar Prasad) and best art direction (Gautam Sen). Even films like ‘A Wednesday’, ‘Roadside Romeo’, ‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!’, ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’ and ‘Thanks Maa’ took one award each. While Neeraj Pandey’s ‘A Wednesday’ has bagged the Indira Gandhi award for Best First Film of a director, Yash Raj Films’ ‘Roadside Romeo’ bagged the best animation film.

Dibakar Banerjee’s satirical ‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!’ has been adjudged the best popular film providing wholesome entertainment, ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’ directed by Nishikant Kamat has got the award for best special effects (Govardhan), and ‘Thanks Maa’ has got Shams Patel the best child artist award. The award for best direction has gone to Bala for Tamil film ‘Naan Kadauul’, while the best actor is Upendra Limaye for Marathi film ‘Jogva’. Bengali film ‘Antaheen’, directed by Annirudh Roy-Chowdhary, has won four awards including for best feature film.

Even though Aamir Khan’s comedy-drama ’3 Idiots’ was the biggest hit of 2009, filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj’s crime caper ‘Kaminey’ has surpassed it in bagging the maximum nominations for the 55th Idea Filmfare Awards.

3 Idiots,’ starring Aamir, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Kareena Kapoor, was highly appreciated by viewers and critics alike but it managed to get only seven nominations in comparison to the nine nominations bagged by ‘Kaminey’ and eight by Saif Ali Khan’s debut production venture ‘Love Aaj Kal’.

Kaminey,’ starring Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, and ’3 Idiots’ have been nominated in categories like best film, best director, best actor and best actress, among others.

’3 Idiots’ has not bagged nominations in the best music and best lyrics categories in which ‘Kaminey’ has been nominated.

Love Aaj Kal’ was directed by Imtiaz Ali and starred Saif along with Deepika Padukone in the lead.

The Filmfare Awards are presented annually by The Times Group to honour both artistic and technical excellence of professionals in the Hindi language film industry of India. The Filmfare ceremony is one of the oldest and most prominent film events given for Hindi films in India. The awards were first introduced in 1954, the same year as the National Film Awards and were initially referred to as the Clare Awards after the editor of The Times of India, Clare Mendionca. A dual voting system was developed in 1956. Under this system, “in contrast to the National Film Awards, which are decided by a panel appointed by Indian Government, the Filmfare Awards are voted for by both the public and a committee of experts.” The Filmfare Awards have been often referred to as Hindi film industry’s equivalent of the Oscar.

New Delhi, When Indian music maestro A.R. Rahman was composing the song “Jai ho”, he didn’t envisage that the composition would become such a rage and win him laurels and awards across the globe.

The song features in British filmmaker Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire”, which is a screen adaptation of Indian author and diplomat Vikas Swarup’s novel “Q & A”.

The composition in the film has won Rahman the most prestigious international awards including, the Oscars, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), Critics Choice Award, The Golden Globe and now the music industry’s biggest honour – the Grammys.

The song that was penned by lyricist Gulzar and Tanvi Shah, was crooned by Sukhvinder Singh, Mahalaxmi Iyer, Vijay Prakash with support from Rahman and Shah.

Rahman, who started his career with director Mani Ratnam’s 1992 Tamil film “Roja”, made his presence felt and has gone up several notches in terms of popularity after the super success of the song “Jai ho”. It made Rahman the most successful Indian composer in the global arena.

New Delhi, Bollywood star Aamir Khan, who is riding high on the success of “3 Idiots”, couldn’t have asked for more. When the actor received the “wonderful news” of getting a Padma Bhushan, the nation’s third highest civilian honour, in the US Monday morning, his mother’s smiling face flashed in his mind.

“I’m so happy to receive this unique honour. The first thing that comes to my mind is my mother’s smiling face,” Aamir SMSed from Utah, US, where he is attending the Sundance Film Festival. His production venture “Peepli Live” had its world premiere there Sunday night.

Directed by Anusha Rizvi, “Peepli Live” is a satire on rural life in India. It features Raghuvir Yadav along with debutant actors from Madhya Pradesh.

“Indeed this has been a good day for me. First my film ‘Peepli Live’ gets a superb response here at the Sundance Film Festival, and then I receive this wonderful news of receiving the Padma Bhushan.

“I only wish, I was back home right now. I would like to thank god for these happy moments, and all my fans and well-wishers for their love, support and good wishes,” added the 44-year-old who is already a recipient of the Padma Shri.

The actor has blazed a new trail to success with “3 Idiots”. According to latest reports, Aamir’s “3 Idiots” that takes a critical look at the education system in the country has become the biggest grosser by earning Rs.382 crore world wide till date.

New Delhi, At 4 a.m. in New York Saturday, the last thing Priyanka Chopra was expecting to hear was that she had won her first National Film Award. She jumped out of bed in sheer joy when she got the news.

“It feels soooooo fantastic! It’s 5 in the morning here (New York) and my phone has been ringing non-stop since about an hour. I am so excited,” Priyanka told IANS over the phone from New York, where she has been shooting for Siddharth Anand’s “Anjaana Anjaani”.

The 27-year-old has won her first ever National Film Award for her performance in Madhur Bhandarkar’s “Fashion”. She says she is glad that she agreed to do the film.

“When Madhur approached me for this film, I was terrified about how complex the character was. But I am glad that I did it,” she said.

Though Priyanka has already won several awards including a Filmfare best actress award for her portrayal of a struggling model in the film, she says the National Award is most special.

“This is a National Award! I was just not expecting this and especially because there are several regional films and actors competing for it. One can’t keep track of the nominations at all. But this feels just great. After having won 15 awards for ‘Fashion’ so far, I feel I have come full circle with this one,” she said.

Instead of celebrating her success, the actress says she was looking forward to the morning shoot scheduled for “Anjaana Anjaani”, in which she is featuring opposite Ranbir Kapoor.

“I have a shoot tomorrow morning. So I just want to sleep right now so that I wake up fresh. I will be in a mood for celebration, but the shooting will definitely happen. It is my bread and butter – and also what will hopefully – yes hopefully, fetch me my next National award,” she joked.

Priyanka, who made her Bollywood debut in 2003, says she received the most special congratulatory call from her parents. Her father Ashok Chopra had shed tears after watching “Fashion” in 2008 because he was touched with his daughter’s performance, and he cried now again after hearing about her victory.

“My father called me up and said he is ecstatic and extremely proud of me. He had tears again. He is happy because I have achieved so much in such a short span of my career, and that makes him really proud,” she added.

Priyanka, who won the Miss World title in 2000, made her Bollywood debut with “The Hero: Love Story of a Spy” and then featured in “Andaaz”, for which she even won a Filmfare best female debut award.

In 2004, she delivered a critically acclaimed performance in “Aitraaz” and later did commercial films like “Mujhse Shaadi Karogi”, “Bluffmaster”, “Krrish”, “Don – The Chase Begins Again”, “Salaam-E-Ishq”, et al. But it was “Fashion” that brought her into the league of top-rated actresses in Bollywood.

She has, since then, given commercial hits like “Dostana” and “Kaminey” and also featured in films like “What’s Your Rashee”, and more recently in “Pyaar Impossible”, which didn’t fare too well at the box office.

She is hoping to strike gold again with “Anjaana Anjaani” and Vishal Bharadwaj’s “Seven Husbands”.
