arshad-warsi-caught-smoking

Panaji, After being caught by an anti-tobacco watchdog for smoking in a college campus in Goa, Bollywood actor Arshad Warsi has vowed not to smoke while making a public appearance.

In a letter to National Organisation for Tobacco Eradication (NOTE) General Secretary Shekhar Salkar dated May 10, Arshad has expressed regret about the incident earlier this month and has admitted that “fans follow their on-screen idols and copy their actions”.

“Henceforth, I will ensure that I throw away the cigarette before I make a public appearance,” Arshad has said in his letter to NOTE.

Explaining the course of events earlier this month, which eventually ended up with him being photographed along with actor Tusshar Kapoor, smoking in public, Arshad said that he was in his vanity van, when fans stopped by to meet him.

“I was smoking in my vanity van parked far away from the college building, when a group of youngsters knocked on the door. As usual I go out of my way to satisfy my fans and I came out to sign the autographs, involuntarily holding the cigarette in my hand,” said the actor, who played the memorable role of Circuit in the “Munnabhai” series.

Speaking to IANS, Salkar said that Arshad’s response speaks well about the actor.

We are delighted to know that somewhere deep in Circuit’s heart, traces of good old Munnabhai still live on,” said Salkar, whose organisation has in the past dragged Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan to court for directly or indirectly promoting smoking.

Hum-Tum-Aur-Ghost

The sheer delight of watching Arshad Warsi play the lead rather the supremely self-assured sidekick gives this otherwise pale romantic comedy a cutting edge. Arshad in his own words plays a guy, who can see dead people. Wish he could see dead plots too.

The screenplay by Arshad, Soumik Sen and Arshad Ali Syed is a deadweight carried forward not by any inward conviction or compulsion, but by the producer-leading man’s will to create a slick and cool space for himself within the stifling space allotted to a one-note film about friendly spirits and a disbelieving girlfriend.

The romantic lady Dia Mirza is very adept at expressing energetic exasperation. She is whiny, clingy and bossy just like over-protective girlfriends tend to be. Arshad is very skilled at conveying the killing anxieties of cautious courtship. He reminds one of Saif Ali Khan in “Dil Chahta Hai”, though we and this baggy film are not even going there.

Arshad Warsi has finally agreed to do ‘Golmaal 3’ after the producers agreed to pay him a whopping Rs.3 crore to be part of the film, sources said. Director Rohit Shetty said Arshad was on for the project, but the actor did not confirm his consent for the film.

Sources said the deal was finally cut Monday, after frantic negotiations. Arshad’s fee is higher than each member of the cast, barring Ajay Devgn. It is even higher than that of Kareena Kapoor who has a three-film deal withthe producers.

Says a source: “After ‘Ishqiya’, Arshad was adamant on his fee. The producers (Ashtavinayak) tried to convince him to take a much smaller fee, arguing that his co-stars Shreyas Talpade, Tusshar Kapoor and Kunal Khemu (who replaces Sharman Joshi) were accepting a far smaller fee and if Arshad was paid three crore, the others would feel short-changed.”

Both movies released Friday and had star-studded red-carpet premieres in the capital Thursday, but “Ishqiya” took the cake with almost 80 percent collections in the opening weekend. “Rann” got only around 30 percent collections.

“‘Ishqiya’ has got a strong opening in both Delhi and Uttar Pradesh in both multiplexes and single-screens. It has got around 80 percent business over the initial weekend,” Yogesh Raizada, corporate head (cinemas) of Wave Cinemas, told IANS.
